Statement Condemning the Death of Diyar Abbas Ahmed from Iraqi Eye Media (Al-Ein)

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad strongly condemns the killing of journalist Diyar Abbas Ahmed from Iraqi Eye Media (Al-Ein) yesterday in Kirkuk. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his colleagues at Iraqi Eye Media, and to all journalists in Iraq as they continue to work each day in what is a noble but often dangerous profession.
A free and vibrant press is an integral component of an open and democratic society. Over 200 journalists in Iraq have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth over the past several years. We call on the Government of Iraq to investigate this reprehensible crime and to take every reasonable measure to protect these dedicated journalists whose work clearly contributes to a strong and independent Iraq.
