Joint Statement By Ambassador Christopher R. Hill and General Ray Odierno Condemning the Bombings of Shi'ite Mosques in Baghdad
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and Multi-National Force-Iraq strongly condemn the bombings of Shi'ite mosques throughout Baghdad that took place on July 31. These barbaric attacks against innocent people at their places of worship are criminal acts of terrorism against the Iraqi people, demand the condemnation of the international community, and violate our common humanity.
The networks that fund, legitimize, train, and support such criminal activity must be uprooted and those responsible for such acts must be held to account under the rule of law. Where those networks transcend the borders of Iraq we will work with the Government of Iraq, the United Nations and all other concerned parties to ensure an effective and coordinated response to shut down the funding streams and the pipelines.
We join the Iraqi people in denouncing all acts of terrorism and remain steadfast in our support of the people and government of Iraq in rejecting all forms of violence. We mourn the senseless loss of life and extend our condolences to the victims' families, friends, and community.
