The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad hosted a graduation ceremony last week for
35 Iraqi English teachers and graduate students upon their successful
completion of online English and teaching methodology courses. The
classes, conducted by the University of Oregon and sponsored by the U.S.
State Department, are part of a wider U.S. commitment to offer enhanced
English teacher training opportunities to Iraqis. This partnership on
English language teaching is a major component of the educational goal
of the U.S.-Iraqi Strategic Framework Agreement.
U.S. Embassy Counselor for Public Affairs Thomas Dougherty saluted the
graduates of the course and praised them for their vision and courage in
serving as "bridges of understanding" as the American-Iraqi relationship
deepens to include more opportunities for educational and cultural
exchange. Mr. Dougherty highlighted the crucial role these English
teachers and students will play in the building of a new Iraq.
The graduates, affiliated with universities and high schools in Baghdad,
Dhi Qar and Diyala, said they had already started to apply many of the
skills introduced in the online courses in their own classrooms. The
courses were highly interactive and provided a unique opportunity for a
true exchange of ideas, as well as teaching and learning techniques,
with their University of Oregon instructors. The participants are
enthusiastic about introducing their colleagues to these valuable
English and teaching methodology resources, which are offered throughout
the year, and said they looked forward to continued cooperation with
American educational institutions.
