Confirmation of Death of Two British Hostages in Iraq

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad extends its sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two British hostages whose deaths were confirmed yesterday by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At this difficult time, our thoughts are also with the remaining hostages and their families.
The taking of hostages is never justified, and we reiterate our call for all hostages to be released immediately. Groups that continue to take or hold hostages can play no legitimate role in Iraqi society. We support the efforts of the Government of Iraq to facilitate the unconditional release of all remaining hostages and to foster national reconciliation through dialogue and inclusion.
