Embassy Baghdad Celebrates US Army's 234th Birthday
June 14, 2009
Maj. Gen. Timothy McHale cuts a cake in celebration of the Army's birthday with Sgt. Michael Kimberly and Staff Sgt. Carol Lott during the short ceremony at the Embassy Dining Facility. On this day, the 234th birthday of the Army, the oldest and youngest NCOs in the crowd were chosen to perform the celebratory cutting. The Army tradition of selecting the oldest and youngest Soldiers was modified to further celebrate the fact that this year was named the year of the NCO by the Secretary of the Army. The Continental Congress voted to create the Continental Army on June 14, 1775, to fight Great Britain. Today is also Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag by Congress in 1777.
