Joint Statement by the U.S. Embassy Baghdad and Multi-National Force-Iraq on the Success of the Hajj Pilgrimage
January 8, 2008
The United States Embassy and Multi-National Force-Iraq congratulate the Iraqi people and the Government of Iraq on the safe completion of this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. More than 30,000 Iraqis traveled to and from Saudi Arabia and the holy sites without a single security incident noted.
The Government of Iraq, working with Coalition Forces, developed the successful security plan. Iraqi Security Forces then led the implementation of the plan, which included organizing the visa process, screening travelers gathered at assembly points, and managing the flow of pilgrims through several airports, countless bus routes, and two major ports of entry.
Of special note was the effective use of air travel in and out of airports in Baghdad, Basra, Irbil, Sulaymaniya, and Mosul, the last of which welcomed its first flight in 14 years on December 28.
The successful Hajj marks yet another successful milestone for the Government of Iraq and the citizens it serves. In the New Year, we look forward to building on the progress we have made together in 2007.
