U.S. Condemns ISIL Terrorism and Supports Holistic Counter-Terrorism Strategy
U.S. Embassy Baghdad | April 14, 2014
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad strongly condemns the ongoing terrorist acts by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and its supporters. In particular, targeting dams and other vital infrastructure victimizes innocent Iraqi citizens. In the past week, hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis have suffered from water shortages as a result of ISIL’s actions. This is in addition to ISIL's ongoing campaign of suicide bombings and terrorist attacks targeting innocent civilians.
The United States is committed to helping the Iraqi Security Forces respond to terrorist threats and protect the population. In response to specific Iraqi requests, the United States has provided Iraqi Security Forces with essential military equipment consistent with our Strategic Framework Agreement and long-term security partnership. We will continue to accelerate such deliveries in order to ensure Iraqi Security Forces are equipped with modern and effective weaponry appropriate to the serious threat that ISIL poses to Iraq and to the region.
U.S. Security support is only one aspect of a comprehensive and holistic approach to combating the ISIL threat in Iraq. In this regard, will continue to encourage the Government of Iraq to fully implement the February 18 Council of Ministers decision on the crisis in Anbar province, which fuses security with political and economic measures, focused on isolating ISIL from the local population and ensuring humanitarian assistance is reaching those in need.
