FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                JANUARY 16, 2012

IN HONOR OF THE REVEREND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

"We will not resort to violence.  We will not degrade ourselves with hatred.  Love will not be returned with hate." (Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

January 16, 2012, marks the 83rd birthday of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Dr. King devoted his life to the struggle for civil rights and equality.  He was a tireless advocate for all people, guiding us to a world where people could live together in mutual respect.  His brave leadership united people of all races, religions, and backgrounds in the quest for civil rights, and his commitment to nonviolence and civility leaves a legacy as relevant to us today as when Dr. King was alive.

While Dr. King was tragically taken from us in 1968, his words and deeds continue to inspire people across the globe.  In honor of Dr. King’s legacy, the Embassy of the United States of America in Baghdad and the U.S. Consulate in Erbil are pleased to announce that they will translate and distribute a collection of the speeches of Dr. King throughout Iraq.  As the struggle towards civil rights and equality continues throughout the world, Dr. King's message and life serve as a roadmap to our ongoing journey of peace between peoples of all nations.
