Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) score is required for applicants to many graduate-level programs in the United States and at international universities. The GRE includes the General Test, composed of verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections, and Subject Tests on specific academic fields. Some universities require only the General Test while others will request applicants to take Subject Tests related to their planned area of study. The GRE Information and Registration Bulletin has additional information on these tests.
The next GRE General Test in Iraq to be administered by AMIDEAST is scheduled for March 11, 2006, with January 27 as the registration deadline. The next GRE subject tests are scheduled for November 12, 2005 with September 30 as the registration deadline. The tests will be administered in Erbil at the University of Salahaddin, College of Engineering in Rizgary Hall (the only designated center for official tests in Iraq).
Registration
The GRE registration fee is $140, in addition to the local registration service charge of $50. Applicants registering locally through AMIDEAST will be charged a total of US $190. Since the GRE registration form includes a number of open-ended questions, you will need to register for the test in person here in Erbil office or with Mr. Fred Miro in Baghdad.
You may also register online at www.gre.org, provided you have a credit card number and a valid international valid mailing address. Online registration fee is US $140 only.

Where do I get GRE Bulletin?
The AMIDEAST/Iraq office in Erbil maintains a supply of test bulletins with all pertinent information about the GRE, including the registration form.

Where can I take GRE general test?
In Iraq, the GRE exam is administered by AMIDEAST in its paper-based format at Salahaddin University in Erbil, College of Engineering in Rizgary Hall.
How do I register to take the GRE in Iraq?
Test-takers with access to the Internet and an international credit card may register for the paper-based test on the GRE Web site. The GRE registration fee is $140. Note that for students registering at the Web site, it is necessary to provide a postal address to which scores can be mailed from the United States.
Students may also register locally through AMIDEAST's office in Erbil, and scores can be sent to Iraq through AMIDEAST, for pick-up by students in Erbil. The registration fee is $140, in addition to the local registration service charge of $50.
Applicants can also register in Baghdad with AMIDEAST representative Mr. Fred Miro. Students choosing to register for the GRE test in Baghdad can register at the Babel Hotel with Mr. Fred Miro. Mr. Miro is available at the Babel Hotel every Saturday (except for Saturday December 17) from 1:00-5:00pm.
There are no exceptions to the local registration deadline. To register locally, please contact AMIDEAST's office in Erbil to schedule an appointment for a visit, at least three days in advance. Contact us by email at iraq@amideast.org, or call the office at 225-0054 (local Erbil number), Saturday through Thursday. The office is located at Bldg. #5, Street 240/4/15, in the former WFP office in Ainkawa, Erbil. Please note that visits are by appointment only. Students will need to complete a paper registration form, review and sign the local registration student agreement, and pay the $190 fee (in U.S. dollars only).
How do I prepare for the GRE?
It is important for you to be familiar with the kinds of questions asked on the GRE. There are several ways to prepare:
- Visit the GRE Web site
- Do the sample questions in the GRE bulletin
- Purchase GRE preparation materials from AMIDEAST.
What do I do on the day of the test?
Arrive at the assigned test center 30 minutes before the assigned test time. Check-in procedures take time. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted to the test, and you will forfeit your test fees. Please remember to bring the following documents:
- Valid identification with a photograph, as described in the GRE registration bulletin,
- Your GRE test confirmation information,
- Your admission ticket which will be provided to you sometimes before the test date,
- And three or four sharpened soft-lead pencils and a good eraser.
What about my scores?
If you registered using AMIDEAST's local registration service, the scores will be mailed to AMIDEAST's headquarters in Washington, DC, and shipped via TNT Courier to AMIDEAST/Iraq, where students can pick up their scores either in Erbil or Baghdad. Scores should be available for pick up six to eight weeks after the test date.The official scores of students who registered through the GRE Web site will be mailed within four to six weeks after the test date, from the United States, to the postal address provided at the time of registration.
Questions about any missing score reports should be directed to Educational Testing Service, the nonprofit organization that scores GRE and issues score reports. An email sent to the ETS customer service address -- gre-info@ets.org -- usually will receive a response in 5 to 7 days. Score report problems are best avoided by careful preparation of the registration form. Write your name and mailing address clearly and follow payment procedures detailed in the GRE bulletin.
If you need score reports to be sent to additional institutions, please complete the form in the GRE bulletin and return it with payment to ETS.
