One of the most important roles for any American Embassy and Consular Section overseas is the protection of American citizens. The State Department and the Embassy strongly warn U.S. citizens against travel to Iraq, which remains very dangerous. We strongly recommend to all Americans who are in Iraq to register with the Embassy. They may register online at http://travel.state.gov.
And, now, I have a couple of announcements:
First of all, I am very pleased to announce that the young American citizen, who has been in Iraq the past few days, has now safely departed Baghdad. This young American is now on his way back home to his family in the United States.
Finally, I would like to make another announcement concerning a critically-ill Iraqi baby. Baby Noor traveled to the United States today for life-saving medical treatment. I would like to thank our Ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad, U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the Consular Affairs Bureau of the U.S. Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Military for their assistance to the Consular Section of the Embassy in this humanitarian effort.
Thank you very much. Happy 2006.
