"Iraq Elections 2005: The Road to Democracy," a new online publication from the Department of State’s Bureau of International Information Programs, gives an overview of the groundbreaking elections that took place in Iraq on January 30.
The publication includes "An Iraq Elections Primer," which gives facts about the election, how it was administered, who the candidates were, and what the tasks of the assembly will be in the coming months. It also includes "Building Democracy in Iraq," which summarizes the basic themes of the election and the efforts to build the institutions of a civil society and a democratic government.
Also featured in the web publication, "The Federalism Path," presents an in-depth look at the system in which power is divided between national and local units of government.
"An Elections Timeline" and a feature entitled, "Iraq, Elections, and the Role of Women" are featured in the publication as well.
An interview with elections expert Laith Kubba, senior program officer at the National Endowment for Democracy, is also included.
