Report of Birth Abroad
If your child born in Iraq has a possible claim to U.S. citizenship, you may apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA). This is a citizenship document that establishes your child’s status as a U.S. citizen. That form can be used to apply for a U.S. passport and/or social security number.
Birth, marriage, and divorce certificates and English translations are required for the CRBA application. Those certificates MUST be certified by the Consular Department of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). The application will not be processed without the MFA certifications. We recommend you apply for the CRBA as soon as possible after your child’s birth. You may also apply for the passport at the same time. Please note that a CRBA cannot be issued to a child over age 18.
An appointment is required for this service. Please make sure you read our Web site before coming to the Embassy to ensure you have all of the proper forms and documents. You can click here to make an appointment.
The Department of State recently redesigned the Report of Birth Abroad to include a variety of state-of-the-art security features to prevent fraud and identity theft. The Report of Birth Abroad certificate is printed in the United States and mailed to the Embassy for your collection. The wait time to receive the certificate and a passport for your child is currently approximately one month.
